PM Africa Safari

PM Africa offers quality Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru treks, the two highest mountains in Tanzania. This page has a lot of information and is divided out as follows:

Mt Kilimanjaro Treks

PM Africa Safari specializes in Mt Kilimanjaro treks. Having the opportunity to undertake such an adventure we know does not come often for our clients. So we work hard to give you the best chance of a successful trek. We take no shortcuts in any aspect of our responsibilites. From hiring top quality, experienced guides and climb staff, to the quality of the food, health and safety monitoring, and using camping equipment that is properly cared for.

Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain that can be climbed without technical climbing skills and equipment. It is termed a "walk up" mountain. But that does not mean that it is an easy achievement. Far from it. At the summit, the available oxygen is only half that as at sea-level. It takes time for your body to adjust to the change in atmosphere and being a "walk up" mountain means that you can progress too quickly. It takes a guide trained to notice early symptoms of altitude sickness and to make adjustments accordingly. Left unchecked, fluid can build in the lungs and/or brain. Our mountian guides are all certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR) with periodic refresher taining. You will be given regular health checks on the mountain to make sure that you have a safe experience.

There are several routes on Mt Kilimanjaro. We suggest taking the longest itinerary that your time/budget will allow. The Marangu Route differs from all other routes in that overnights on Marangu are in dormitory style huts with solar lighting. All other routes are camping routes. Marangu Route is also the only route where the path down the mountain is the same as the path going up, making the camps busy with climbers going both directions, also not offering as much variety in scenery as other routes. It should be noted that you can climb Mt Kilimanjaro during any time of the year but the wettest months are March - May and November - early December. The northern side of the mountain receives less precipitation meaning the Rongai Route and Northern Circuit Route become a good choice during these months and the option of overnights in huts on Marangu Route might be more appealing.

Kilimanjaro Trek Itineraries

Lemosho Route

This route starts on the western side of the mountain then crosses the southern side of the mountain, merging with the Machame and Umbwe Routes. It is a very scenic route, and offers very good acclimatization. Some older websites list this as a little used route, but this is quite outdated since it is a very popular route now. Like the Northern Circuit Route, it is a long route. We offer both an 8 days and a 7 days itinerary. For most people, we suggest the 8 days version. This route has a high success rate.

Northern Circuit Route

This route starts on the western side of the mountain, the same as Lemosho Route, then deviates as it winds around the north side before ascending up to Uhuru Peak from the east. The descent is down the Mweka Route. This is a newer route so it is not yet very busy but we look for this route to become increasingly popular. This route is a good choice for people wanting more solitude. It is also a good route choice during wetter times of the year. This route offers a good variety of scenery, as you will be seeing the western, northern, and eastern sides of Kilimanjaro. We offer the Northern Circuit Route as either an 8 days or a 9 days itinerary.

Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is considered by some to be the easiest route on Mt Kilimanjaro. It is a gentle route and those choosing this route do not have to scale the Barranco Wall that some trekkers fear. This route starts on the north side of the mountain, very close to the Kenyan Border. It is fairly scenic and is not busy. The descent follows the same path as the Marangu Route. Note that although the Marangu Route uses huts for overnight accommodations, those descending using the Rongai Route use tents for overnights. The north side of Kilimanjaro receives less precipitation, so during the wetter months of March, April, May, November, December this route is a good consideration. Rongai Route can be chosen as either a 6 days or 7 days itinerary.

Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is the oldest route on Mt Kilimanjaro. It is a short route and is different than the other routes in two ways. First, this route features overnights in huts instead of tents. The huts are very basic dormitory style with solar panel lighting. Second, it is the only route where the path down is the same as the path going up. Since climbers going both directions stay at the same camp, it is more crowded. It is also not as scenic as the other routes. Due to the extra comfort of the huts, and short number of days needed, this route is chosen by many less committed climbers. In addition, with the short number of days to acclimmatize to the altitude, this route has a lower success rate. This route is offered as either a 5 days or 6 days itinerary. We strongly suggest the 6 days version if possible for a better chance for a successful summit.

PM Africa Safari - Marangu Route Map

Marangu Route is a popular route and the only route where overnights are in dormitory style huts. For tour companies that have very few Kilimanjaro treks this route is promoted heavily due to to fact that the companies do not need to provide tents (therefore fewer porters) and logistically it is a less complicated route due to the fact that the route down is the same as the route going up. This is the least scenic route though. It can be done as a 5 days trek although the success rate increases if you use the 6 days itinerary.

Mountain Sample Diet

A good diet while on the mountain can make or break a successful summit attempt...

×

Mountain Diet

It takes a lot of energy to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. Your success may depend on the meals that are prepared for you. This is one area where budget companies cut corners, but PM Africa Safari knows that this is unwise to make reaching the summit even harder just to save a few dollars. Unfortunately, one of the effects of high altitude is loss of appitite and nausea. That means the your meals need to be easy to digest and appealing. PM Africa Safari can accommodate nearly any special diet if we are informed in advance of the trek. What is typically served is:
Breakfasts - pancakes/chappati, porridge, fruits, eggs, sausages, bread with jam/honey, coffee/tea/hot chocolate.
Lunches - Sandwiches, soup, chicken, fried bananas, peanuts, fruit, boiled eggs, chocolate bar, coffee/tea/hot chocolate.
Dinners - Peanuts/popcorn, stew/soup, pasta/potatoes/rice, vegetables, beef/chicken, coffee/tea/hot chocolate.

Climb Staff Tipping Procedure

Tipping Procedure and Typical Tip Amounts

×

Climb Staff Tipping

Universally, once clients see how hard the climb staff works to each climber to the summit, or in case of a disabled climber how hard they work to get that person down the mountain safely, they feel great respect for the entire mountain crew. The very nature of tipping is that it is optional and at the discretion of each client. PM Africa Safari pays their staff a salary at the upper end of what is typical for tour companies. Still tips form an important portion of the climb staff income to provide for their families. What we list as appropriate tips is based on the cost of living in Tanzania and what past clients have deemed appropriate.

PM Africa Safari has a strict policy that our climb staff is not to use the climb to put pressure on you by begging or by telling hardship stories in hope if larger tips. If you find this happening please inform us so we can give those staff members further training. If you find that the service you recieve is not acceptable, let us know.

Tips can be given in any currency that is exchangable in local banks. We cannot accept tips by debit/credit cards since the company would be taxed on any amount paid by bank card. Equipment that you have no further use for is also welcome for tips. The actual number of porters is not determined until everything (your gear, tents, staff tents, food for both clients and staff, utensils, etc) is weighed. An extra porter is needed for the portable toilet.

Suggested Amounts: What we have listed has been suggested as appropriate according to past clients and taking the Tanzanian cost of living into account. Amounts are listed in USD but tips can be in other currencies.
Head Guide: $25/day
Asistant Guides: $20/day
Cook: $15/day
Porters: $10/day
The above amounts are per group. For example for a 8 day trek the suggested head guide tip would be $200 divided among the number of people in the group so a group of 4 trekkers would each contribute $50.

Mt Kilimanjaro Day Trip

Marangu Route allows day hikes for a little taste of what a Mt Kilimanjaro climb is like or for acclimatization...

×

Mt Kilimanjaro Day Trip

We would pick you up in the morning and drive you to Marangu Gate. From there you would walk through the rain-forest to Mandara Hut where you will stop to enjoy lunch. From there you can continue to Maundi Crater to enjoy the view before returning back to the Marangu Gate where our vehicle will be waiting to return you back to Moshi. Included is private transportation to and from the mountain, all park entry fees and taxes, box lunch, drinking water, and guide salary. Not included is guide tip.

Mt Meru Treks

PM Africa Safari offers Mt Meru Treks. The second highest mountain in Tanzania, this is a wonderful trek in its own right, but is also a great acclimatization trek before attempting Mt Kilimanjaro. There is only one route on Mt Meru and the trek is typically done in 4 days, although a 3 days itinerary is also possible. Overnights are in dormitory style huts with solar lighting, similar to Marangu Route on Mt Kilimanjaro. All treks are accompanied by an armed park ranger since at the lower altitudes there are a fair number of animals. Note: Depending on the availability of rangers, Arusha National Park has the authority to have groups from different tour companies share one park ranger. Each group will still have its own climb staff servicing their respective clients. But we cannot guarentee that your group will not be along side a different group since the decision to share a park ranger belongs to Arusha National Park Authorities exclusively. The packing list, suggested tips, mountain diet, safety, etc. for Mt Meru is the same as Mt Kilimanjaro.
